Card connections

Card connections link your card to a participating service (like a subscription, bill or one-off payment) without using your card details. They're a simple way to make regular payments using the Bankwest App.

How card connections work

Your card details are converted to a token which makes them unidentifiable. When your card details are converted to a token, they can’t be intercepted and used by someone else, making it safe and secure to use.

The token is then used instead of your card details for any online transactions made to the participating service.

If your card expires or is reported as damaged, the token and card connection are automatically updated. For lost/stolen cards, we will delete card connections and tokens created in the past 14 days.

How to view your card connections

Card connections will be set up automatically when you make a card payment with a participating service. Here's how to view your existing ones.

  1. Tap ‘Cards’ on the bottom menu of the app
  2. Choose your card
  3. Under 'Manage', choose 'Card connections'.

You can view your past transactions under 'Wallets' and all your card connections under 'Services'.

Frequently asked questions

In order to create a token and card connection, the subscription service (like Netflix) or merchant service (like PayPal) needs to have chosen to participate with Mastercard®. So if you’re paying for a service with your card but you can’t see it under card connections, it’s probably because that service hasn’t gotten on board yet.

If you have recently reported your card as lost/stolen in the Bankwest App, your card connections to some services may have been automatically deleted.

Keep in mind each card connection will only appear under the card that's linked. You can only view your card connections in the app.

This functionality is available for both existing and new subscriptions or services, but it’s up to the service provider to enable card connections for both their new and existing customers.

So if you’ve been a customer of a particular service for many years, they may still charge your account using your card details because they haven’t set up card connections for their existing customers, while a new customer will have a card connection enabled straight away.

If you’d like to remove a card connection, you’ll need to give us a call. It's also a good idea to get in contact with the service provider directly.

Yes, you can have multiple card connections for the same service, and these can be on one card or across multiple cards.

There are a few possible reasons for this:

  • You're a joint holder of a credit card and another cardholder has got a payment set up with that service on their card
  • Your card is compromised and your card details have been used by someone else to set up an account. If you think this is the case, please get in touch with us straight away.
