What’s a card connection?

When you link your card to a participating service (like a subscription, bill or one-off payment), it creates a connection between your card and the service, without using your actual card details.

How it works

When you enter your card details for an online transaction, they become unidentifiable – it’s called a token.
When you make a payment through the card connection, the token is transmitted instead of your card details.
If your card expires or is reissued, the token and card connection will be updated automatically.

You don’t have to do anything to get started – it’ll be set up for you.

When your card details are converted to a token, they can’t be intercepted and used by someone else.

We’ll update the token if your card details change, meaning future payments will still go through smoothly.

How to view your card connections

  1. Tap on the ‘Cards’ screen from the bottom menu
  2. Tap on your card
  3. Choose ‘Manage my card’ > ‘Card connections'
  4. Under ‘Wallets', tap on the connection to view your past transactions
  5. Under 'Services', you'll be able to see your card connections.

Why can’t I see a particular service listed in my card connections?

In order to create a token and card connection, the subscription service (like Netflix) or merchant service (like PayPal) needs to have chosen to participate with Mastercard®. So, if you’re paying for a service with your card but you can’t see it under card connections, it’s probably because that service hasn’t gotten onboard yet.

Remember, card connections can only be seen under the card they’re linked to, so you might need to check all your cards to see each one. Keep in mind that you can only view your card connections in the app.


Are card connections only available for new services or will they still work for existing services?

This functionality is available for both existing and new subscriptions or services, however it’s up to the service provider to enable card connections for both existing and new customers, which we have no control over.

This can mean if you’re an existing customer, you may not have a card connection yet. For example, if you’ve been a customer of a particular service for many years, they may still charge your account using your card details because they haven’t set up card connections for their existing customers, but a new customer will have a card connection enabled straight away.


Can I delete a card connection?

If you’d like to remove a card connection, you’ll need to give us a call. It's also a good idea to get in contact with the service provider directly.


Can I have multiple card connections linked to multiple cards?

Yes, card connections will be linked under the card the payment comes out of, and you can have multiple card connections for the same service on one or multiple cards. For example, if you have two subscriptions to the same service on the same card, then you’ll see both connections under the one card in the app. If you have them on different cards, they’ll appear under the separate cards – it just depends what card details you initially set them up on.


Why can I see multiple card connections for the same merchant or service?

This could be for a few reasons:

  • If you've signed up to multiple accounts of the same service – for example, if you’re paying for two different Netflix accounts using the same card (like yours and a family member's)
  • If you're a joint holder of a credit card and another cardholder has also got a payment set up with the same service on their card
  • If your card is compromised and your card details have been used by someone else to set up an account – if you think this is the case, please get in touch with us straight away.
