What do I need to apply for a personal loan?

Thinking of applying for a personal loan? Speed up your application process by knowing the documents you'll need ahead of time.

Identification for new customers

Applying online

If you’re applying for a personal loan online, you can use our electronic ID check.

Applying at a branch

Visit your local Bankwest branch with an original or certified copy of one of the following:

  1. One form of primary ID with a photo (i.e. passport or driver’s licence) or
  2. Two forms of primary ID without a photo (e.g. birth certificate and government benefits card) or
  3. One form of primary ID without a photo (e.g. birth certificate or Citizenship papers) and one form of secondary ID (e.g. a utility bill).

If you’re not near a Bankwest branch, just print our Personal Loan Identity Verification Form (PDF) and take it to your local Australia Post Bank@Post outlet with your ID.

Proof of income

Your current employment circumstances will determine what documents we’ll need to see.

Do you work for an employer? (PAYG)

If you earn PAYG income not paid into a Bankwest account you’ll need to provide two of your most recent consecutive payslips.

Do you own your own business or subcontract? (Self-employed)

We’ll need to see two of your most recent Notices of Assessment from the Australian Taxation Office showing your earnings for these financial years. We may also need copies of your taxation and financial reports from your accountant. These must be from within 18 months of the application submission date.

Do you receive income from a…

Self Managed Superannuation Fund (SMSF)?
You’ll need to supply the most recent SMSF member benefit statement and a letter from your financial planner or accountant. The letter needs to confirm you’re receiving payments from the fund and show your balance, minimum payment amount, tax and tax free components, and ‘pension’ status.

retail or industry superannuation fund?
You’ll need the most recent statement of your super balance, including evidence of regular and ongoing payments. Where the payment amounts are not shown, we’ll also need three months’ statements showing the credits to your bank account.

pension?
You’ll need your most recent pension statement showing current payments.

rental property?
You’ll need a current, signed rental tenancy agreement or three months of rental income credits to your bank account. You can also bring a rental statement from your managing agent from the past two months, or your two most recent tax returns where the property is already held.

Refinancing

If you’re refinancing debt(s) from another financial institution, you’ll need to provide your most recent consecutive bank statements from the last three months for each debt being consolidated. We’ll accept printouts from online banking. The statements must show the:

  • Account holder name
  • Financial institution name
  • BSB and account number
  • Transaction history.

Secured Car Loan

If you’re applying for a Secured Car Loan, you may need to provide some extra documents once your loan is conditionally approved.

Dealership

If you plan on buying a vehicle from a dealership we’ll need:

  • A signed contract of sale or tax invoice showing the vehicle identification number (VIN), engine number and registration number
  • Your current motor vehicle insurance certificate. This must show Bankwest as the registered interest.

Private sale

If you plan on buying a vehicle by private sale, please provide the:

  • Current vehicle registration papers from the seller and the current payout letter (if they hold finance on the vehicle). This must include the VIN, engine number and registration number
  • Current motor vehicle insurance certificate. This must show Bankwest as the registered interest.

Using your own vehicle as security

If you want to use your own vehicle as security for the loan, we'll ask you for your:

  • Current vehicle registration paper. This must include the VIN, engine number and registration number. The vehicle must be registered in the state in which you live
  • Current motor vehicle insurance certificate. This must show Bankwest as the registered interest.

What happens next?

If you’re conditionally approved, we’ll email you and ask you to provide your supporting documents.

You can bring the documents to a branch or send them in to us. When sending documents you must quote your reference number, which you’ll receive during the application process.
