The latest report in the Bankwest Social Indicator Series has revealed that with national job vacancies climbing to 237,000, almost one in three (31 per cent) businesses are now being directly impacted by skills shortages.
The Business Skills Survey also revealed:
- The mining states of Western Australia and Queensland are where businesses are hardest hit by the skills shortage - 40 per cent are directly impacted;
- Businesses in capital cities have greater difficulty recruiting staff, compared to businesses in regional areas;
- Thirty-seven per cent of businesses who have experienced skills shortages have recruited from interstate and 29 per cent have recruited from overseas; and
- Two thirds of businesses (65 per cent) looking for workers find it particularly difficult to recruit experienced staff.
