StepUp4kids

OUR MISSION To inspire children to be at the heart of building healthier local communities OBJECTIVES; To encourage young people to embrace fitness through the simple act of walking together; To create opportunities for young people to be health role models for their families; To create opportunities for parents to participate as role models for their children; To build links within local communities to establish a sustainable model for health; To create an exercise environment that is accessible to all children with the focus on personal achievements rather than competitive goals; To create excitement around the idea of health and fitness; To build a program that supports teaching staff; To create opportunities for young people to be leaders within a school community; To build an organic model that incorporates all facets of health including good nutrition to support the fitness program; To celebrate the achievements of all participants and supporters of the program StepUp4Kids started with a couple of parents competing in the City to Surf and wanting to find a way to encourage their children to also compete. It was also a way of getting our children fit in a time where childhood obesity is becoming an epidemic. This small seed has led to a project that is now an organic model for health for every school. StepUp4Kids objective is to get as many students in schools fit over a ten week period in the lead up to iconic public fitness events. Students aim to cover the distance of a short marathon, walking the oval once a week as an active school community. Community role models walk with students to motivate and inspire them. Student leaders are given the opportunity to organise, motivate and encourage the other students. Parents unite, walk and assist with the effectiveness of the program. StepUp4Kids is a whole of community health program that could be adapted for all schools in Western Australia. It has the power to engage every student.

Hensman Street Kindy

Founded in 1977, Hensman Street Pre-School Incorporated (known as Hensman Street Kindy) is a three-year-old pre-school registered by the Department of Education Services WA (DES). We are a not-for-profit community kindergarten and as such all funds come from parents, fundraising and donations. There is encouragement of children, families and staff to participate in the running of the kindergarten through committee and sub-committee involvement, busy bees, fundraising and social events. These are active functions critical in maintaining the kindergartens existence. Being a community-led kindergarten, Hensman Street Kindy highly value the links between home, kindergarten, school and the wider community and work in partnership with all of these groups to provide the best start for each child.
