Enjoy better security and more features with SMS code

We’ve introduced extra security, so you’ll feel safer when you bank or shop online.

SMS code is simple to use and free. Plus, you’ll get access to more features in BOB like higher daily payment limits and the ability to change your debit/credit card PIN or quickly reset your secure code (online banking password) online.

When a stronger identity check is required, we’ll ask you to enter a 6 digit code which we’ll send via text message to your mobile.

This means you need to have something you know (the 6 digit code) and something you have (your mobile) to confirm your identity which is why it’s our strongest level of security.

If you are doing your banking on the latest version of the Bankwest App with PIN Login enabled, you may no longer be required to enter SMS codes. Security enhancements mean SMS code is no longer required when using PIN Login or Fingerprint Login .

Common questions:

  • Why am I not getting any SMS messages?

If you are not receiving your SMS code, please turn your phone off and back on and request a new SMS.

If the SMS code is still not coming through please check that your SMS inbox is not full and that you have reception and if you are still experiencing issues please call us on 1300 440 749 to complete your transaction.

If you are doing your banking on the latest version of the Bankwest App with PIN Login enabled, you may no longer be required to enter SMS codes. Refer to our security centre for more info.

  • When will I be asked to enter an SMS code?

You will still login the same way but will be prompted to enter an SMS code when making the following transactions:

    • adding or paying a new BPAY or Pay AnyBody recipient
    • making a BPAY or Pay AnyBody payment above a certain dollar amount
    • making an international transfer to someone overseas
    • increasing your daily limits
    • resetting a forgotten secure code online
    • activating your debit or credit card or choosing a new PIN
    • changing your secret questions or updating your contact details
  • How does SMS code protect me?

SMS code is our strongest level of security as it requires you to have "something you know" (your SMS code)" plus "something you have" (your mobile phone) to complete certain transactions. This makes it harder for somebody else to try and make any payments using your account details.

  • How do I register for SMS code?

If you're an existing BOB customer, all you need to do is upgrade your security. Just log on to BOB, select my details & security from the left hand menu and click activate SMS code. You'll then be prompted to set up some secret questions and confirm your mobile number for SMS code. If you're new to BOB, then you will be prompted to upgrade your security when you first log in - you can skip the security upgrade 3 times if you're in a hurry.

  • What if I don't want to use SMS code?

If you're having trouble using SMS code then please call us on 1300 440 749 to discuss your options. Don't forget SMS code offers you the strongest level of security in BOB and gives you access to extra features like higher daily payment limits and the ability to reset your online banking password without having to call us.

Plus, if you enjoy shopping online using your Bankwest MasterCard, you'll also be protected with SMS at sites that display the MasterCard Secure Code or Verified by Visa logos.

If you are doing your banking on the latest version of the Bankwest App with PIN Login enabled, you may no longer be required to enter SMS codes. Refer to our security centre for more info.

  • What if my mobile reception is unreliable?

If you're registered for SMS code and having trouble receiving SMS codes, please contact  us on 1300 440 749 to discuss your options. We'll ensure your online banking continues to run smoothly.

  • What if I'm overseas or roaming?

As long as you have activated global roaming on your mobile, you will still receive SMS codes whilst overseas.

If you don't have roaming enabled or if you don't plan on taking your mobile with you, please call us on 1300 440 749 prior to departing to make temporary arrangements whilst overseas.

If you are doing your banking on the latest version of the Bankwest App with PIN Login enabled, you may no longer be required to enter SMS codes. Refer to our security centre for more info.

  • How do I change my mobile number?

You’ll need to call us on 1300 440 749 to update your number.

  • What if I don’t have my mobile?

If you're being prompted to enter an SMS code but you don't have your mobile phone handy, please call us on 1300 440 749 to help with your transaction. If you're making a payment to an existing recipient, you could try making a smaller payment that doesn't require an SMS code.

  • What if I forgot to tell Bankwest before I travel overseas?

If you've headed overseas with your mobile phone and have global roaming enabled, then you can still receive SMS codes. If you have left your mobile phone back in Oz then you will need to call us if you're prompted for an SMS code to complete your transaction.

Don't forget, you will only be prompted to enter an SMS code for certain transactions and may not be prompted for an SMS code at all.

TIP: If you know who you need to pay in advance, schedule all your payments in BOB, before you depart.
