Insights to growing your business

17 October 2017

We sat down with two small business owners to ask them a few questions about their journey to date, how they’ve grown their businesses and what they’ve done to create an optimal work/life balance.

Benjamin Trinh's insights

After graduating from university and practising with a number of overworked physiotherapists, Benjamin founded Life Ready Physio & Pilates in 2011 with the aim of creating a new benchmark for the industry. The company now has 19 clinics and 200 staff in Perth and has recently expanded to Melbourne opening its first clinic in the Victorian capital in 2017. Ben recently featured as a panelist at Bankwest’s Connect Event where he shared his insights into creating an optimal work/life balance, his approach to mental health in the workplace and how he schedules time off for his birthday every year. We sat down with Ben before the event to ask him a few questions about his journey and how he’s managed to grow his business so fast.

Ben’s top 3 tips for small businesses considering expanding

  • Define your business values and goals and how these fit into your personal life
  • Don’t be afraid to make mistakes as long as you take learnings from these
  • Hire the right people, understand their personal direction, create alignment between them and your business.

Helen Pow's insights

Helen was living in New York when she envisaged the idea of The Little Posy Co. – an online florist that offered one style of bouquet each day for a set low price including delivery. After returning to Perth she launched the company in November 2014 and leveraged social media to promote her business. Today, The Little Posy Co. employs 8 staff and 20 contract drivers, delivers to more than 200 Perth suburbs and has more than 43,000 followers on Instagram. Helen achieved all this while starting her family and having her first child in early 2017. Helen recently featured as a panelist at Bankwest’s Connect Event where she discussed the challenges of starting a family as a small business owner, how she was able to take time off for maternity leave and why a good support network is important. We spoke with Helen before the event to ask her some questions about utilising social media to grow her company and how she juggled running her business and becoming a mum.

Helen’s top 3 tips for small businesses to utilise social media

  • Research popular social profiles to see the type of content being posted
  • Make sure to post good-quality content, such as nicely framed photos
  • Post consistently to build your followers and maintain your presence.
