Enjoy the benefits of safer, happier online banking
27 July 2012
In the coming months we’ll be introducing changes to Bankwest Online Banking (BOB) to give you access to better security and more features.
SMS code for online banking
SMS code is simple to use and free. Plus, you’ll get access to more features in BOB like higher daily payment limits. When a stronger identity check is required, we’ll ask you to enter a 6-digit code which we’ll send via text message to your mobile.
To take advantage of SMS code, all BOB customers will be prompted to
upgrade their security over the next three months. All you need to do is setup some secret questions and confirm your mobile number – we won’t ask you for any account details.
When it’s your turn to upgrade, you will be prompted to complete the ‘upgrade my security’ wizard as soon as you log in to BOB. We understand you may be in a hurry at the time so you will have the opportunity to skip the security upgrade three times.
What are the benefits of this security upgrade?
This security upgrade is our latest initiative in ensuring your online banking is as safe as possible. In the event your account should become compromised, the potential harm will be significantly reduced with the introduction of this SMS code security upgrade. Alongside the increased security, you’ll be able to increase your payment limits and reset a forgotten secure code through online banking without having to call us.
When will I be asked to enter an SMS code?
You will still login the same way but will be prompted to enter an SMS code when making the following transactions:
- adding or paying a new BPAY/Pay AnyBody recipient
- making a BPAY/Pay AnyBody payment above a certain $ amount
- increasing your daily limits
- resetting a forgotten secure code online
- changing your secret questions or updating your contact details
What if I don’t have a mobile?
You’ll get extra security by answering some secret questions instead whenever an extra identity check is required. You’ll set these up as part of the security upgrade.
What about mobile banking?
Mobile phones are more vulnerable to being lost or stolen so mobile banking will have a maximum daily payment limit of $2,000 to reduce the risk of any unauthorised activity. This is also why we will no longer allow payments to new recipients from your mobile, once the new security features are rolled out.
What else is changing?
Stronger online banking passwords
A strong password is an important tool in protecting yourself online. We’re changing the rules so you can create longer, stronger passwords.
If your existing password is less than 8 characters in length, then you may be prompted to change it. Our new strength meter will help ensure your new password passes the strength test.
New and improved menu
We’ve been tidying up our left-hand menu so it’s easier to find your favourite tools and discover all our new features. The key changes you need to know are:
- ‘message centre’ will be your one stop shop for accessing your ‘notifications’ and ‘BankMail’
- ‘customer service’ will become ‘self service’
- ‘user maintenance’ will become ‘my details and security’

SMS code for cards
If you shop online using your Bankwest debit or credit card, then you’ll get extra security with SMS code at sites that display the MasterCard SecureCode or Verified by Visa logos.
Can I still purchase goods online if I don’t have a mobile?
Yes. If you aren’t registered for SMS code then your online shopping experience will not change and you will still be protected by our No Loss Security Guarantee.
