Iconic Western Australian institution, Bankwest is proud to celebrate the talent of locally-born artist, the late Robert Juniper, with an exhibition showcasing his work created during the 1980s.

Bankwest is fortunate to have acquired a strong collection of Juniper’s art works, considering his work is sought after and held in many private and public collections worldwide.

Bankwest Art Curator, Sandra Murray said it was fitting that some of Juniper’s renowned artistic achievements would be on display at Bankwest Art Gallery under the exhibition title: “Robert Juniper – A Celebration”.

“Juniper’s passion for the Australian bush evolved into a lyrical style which drew international acclaim for his work,” she said.

“His poetic interpretations of the landscape reached a zenith in the late 1970s and 1980s as these paintings testify.”

Robert Litchfield Juniper, born in 1929 in the Wheatbelt town of Merredin, received many accolades for his work including the prestigious Wynne Prize in 1976 and 1980.

He was also awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of WA in 1984, named a State Living Treasure in 1998 and made a member of the Order of Australia for services to the visual arts in 2011.

“Juniper found inspiration in his journeys to the outback which he translated into his unique semi abstract style,” Ms Murray said.

“He drew insight from English, European and Japanese painters of the early 1900s along with contemporary Australian artists such as Sam Fullbrook, and Elwynn Lynn.”

Ms Murray explained that Juniper was best known for his evocative depictions of the Western Australian landscape.

“He became one of Australia’s most distinctive contemporary landscape painters.”

Robert Juniper resided in Darlington for the past 60 years, and passed away in late 2012.
