Organisers of the annual Bankwest Gallipoli Run are hoping this year’s event will be the biggest yet, as Western Australians help mark 100 years since the Gallipoli beach landings.

The annual charitable run held in Kings Park on Sunday 19 April will be the result of a partnership between Athletics WA and Bankwest.

While hundreds of runners have already signed up for the event, Bankwest Head of Community Engagement, Craig Spencer, said he hoped many more will put their hands up for the challenge.

“This year is Bankwest’s 120th year of serving the community of Western Australia and so it’s fitting that we stand by an event that recognises and remembers an important chapter in our history. We want to honour the brave Anzacs and never forget their enormous sacrifices,” Mr Spencer said.

“As it is 100 years since the Gallipoli landings, we would be thrilled if this year’s event was the biggest ever held.”

This is Bankwest’s fifth year supporting the Gallipoli Run and in that time the event has raised more than $50,000 for the Returned and Services League (RSL), Legacy WA and Athletics WA.

Athletics WA Chief Executive Wayne Loxley said the Bankwest Gallipoli Run was always a moving occasion, but this year it had extra significance.

“To commemorate the centenary, runners will be invited to place a wooden cross with tributes and messages from WA school children to be displayed in a designated area at the end of the event,” said Mr Loxley.

“The crosses will remain in place until after Anzac Day, before being sent overseas to cemeteries where fallen Australian service men and women lie.”

The Bankwest Gallipoli Run is a family-friendly event and people of all ages and levels of fitness are encouraged to become involved, challenging themselves while enjoying the beautiful surrounds of Kings Park. Participants can choose between the 5km and 10km courses, which both start at the outdoor cinema site at Synergy Parkland.

An additional Gallipoli Run event will be held in Albany the day after Anzac Day, on Sunday 26 April, with 5km and 8km options. It will be the second year that Albany has hosted a Gallipoli Run event. For more information or to register visit Bankwest customers receive a 10 per cent discount on their entry fees.

Entries for the Perth run close on Wednesday 15 April and the first 2000 to register will receive a free event t-shirt.
