For the second time in 2012, Bankwest has been recognised as a leading Australian employer by the Federal Government, this time for supporting the Australian Defence Force Reserves.

Bankwest was recently announced as the winner of the Employer of the Year Award by the Western Australia Defence Reserves Support Council.

Bankwest Human Resources Chief Executive, Gill Rees said the Bank was proud to support colleagues who wanted to give something back to the community.

"Supporting our people in the Australian Defence Force Reserves is an important part of Bankwest’s engagement with the community," Ms Rees said.

"And in our experience, we get much more back from our colleague’s involvement in the Reserves than we give in terms of our support."

The Bank and its Reservists were acknowledged late last week at a ceremony at the South of Perth Yacht Club in Applecross, Western Australia.

Parliamentary Secretary for Defence, Senator David Feeney, congratulated Bankwest for their support of Australian Defence Force Reserves.

"The Employer of the Year Award recognises the great work of Bankwest to make a workplace that supports Reserve members of the Australian Defence Force," Senator Feeney said.

"The support of employers is essential. By ensuring flexibility for Reservists in the workplace, employers make it possible for Reservists to serve part time in the Australian Defence Force.

"Currently there are more than 74 Western Australian Reservists in the Solomon Islands, helping maintain peace and stability in that country. I thank both the employers and Reservists who work with us."

The awards recognise private sector and government employers who have been particularly supportive of their Reservist employees.

Three Bankwest colleagues - Shaun Fenn (Army Reservist), Marian Todd (Army Reservist) and Bindy Banwait (Air Force Reservist) - jointly nominated the Bank for the award.

It’s the second time Bankwest has been cited as being an employer of choice in the past eight months.

The Employer of the Year Award comes after Bankwest received the national Employer of Choice for Women (EOCFW) citation for the first time in March from the Federal Government’s Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency (EOWA).
