Rugby in Western Australia has received a significant boost with Bankwest joining as the Official Grassroots Partner of RugbyWA.

The Emirates Western Force may be languishing at the bottom of the Super 14 log, but rugby in Western Australia received a big boost today with the announcement of a new sponsorship from Bankwest.

The six figure financial injection will be channeled towards grassroots rugby development with the partnership beginning immediately and initially running for two years.

Bankwest Managing Director Jon Sutton said the bank was excited about supporting rugby in WA.

"Bankwest is looking forward to supporting RugbyWA and helping to develop and grow the great game of rugby in our home state," Mr Sutton said.

Rugby has soared since the introduction of a professional team in the state with participation rates doubling over the past five years.

At ME Bank Stadium the Force, in spite of their lowly position on the ladder, have still attracted good crowds, reflecting the popularity of the sport in Western Australia.

The new grassroots partnership with Bankwest is expected to further enhance the profile and opportunity for all West Australian's to participate and enjoy rugby union.

"It is a great fit for RugbyWA to be partnered alongside Bankwest, an organisation whose brand is so similarly aligned with our own," said RugbyWA CEO Vern Reid.

"We are both West Australian entities who have a proud heritage in this state and have built a strong presence throughout our local community while also taking the opportunity to expand nationally and internationally.

"We are delighted to have Bankwest partner rugby in WA and their commitment to the sport is further recognition of the great work being done in the community by RugbyWA."

As part of the partnership Bankwest will also proudly sponsor RugbyWA's brand new mascot 'Westy' the Swan.

Westy was unveiled for the first time to the delight of the passionate members' supporters at the Emirates Western Force home match against the Chiefs on Saturday evening.
