Volunteering.. helping make the world a better place
01 April 2011
Volunteering empowers people to take an active part in the development of their communities, to take care of the needs of others and to make an impact in the lives of other people.
Its ten years since the International Year of Volunteers was established and, since then, the United Nations has asked for the anniversary to be marked around the world. The main message? That volunteering often starts at home but, together, volunteers can change the world!
From the beginning of April, 40 Bankwest colleagues will start their skilled volunteering journey through a partnership with the Australian Business and Community Network (ABCN). They’ll be taking part in one of three programmes:
• GOALS (Growing Opportunities and Learning Skills): a mentoring program for year 9/10 students which aims to widen the life choices for children considered to be at high risk of disengaging with school.
• Spark & RISE: reading programs with corporate volunteers who partner with school students on a weekly basis to offer one on one reading and support.
• Aspirations equips students with the knowledge and tools to make informed decisions about their career choices and pathways after school.
It’s just another way that Bankwest is helping in the local communities through its volunteering programme.
