Enjoy security and more features with SMS code

We’ve introduced extra security with SMS code and secret questions so you’ll feel safer (and happier) when you bank or shop online.

This means from time to time you will be prompted to enter an SMS code or answer some secret questions when completing certain tasks in online banking. For example, making a payment to a new recipient or increasing your daily payment limit.

If you upgrade to SMS code, you’ll also get access to more features like higher daily payment limits and being able to reset a forgotten secure code online without having to call us.

Everyone has to upgrade their security

If you’re an existing BOB customer you'll be prompted to upgrade your security at some time in the future. But if you're eager to upgrade now you can select my details & security from the menu and then click activate SMS code.

If you’re new to BOB you’ll be prompted to upgrade your security when you first log on. If you’re in a hurry, you can skip the upgrade 3 times by clicking ask me later.

Upgrade to better security in 5 easy steps

When prompted:

  1. click upgrade my security to begin
  2. setup four secret questions
    • for the first two questions select your choice from the menu and enter your answer below each question
    • for the last two you can write your own – just remember to also enter the answers below each one

    TIP: Ensure your questions and answers are more than 3 characters in length and don’t contain any quotes or commas. A good secret question is one known only to you that cannot be easily guessed.
  3. confirm your mobile number for SMS code
    • if you already have a mobile registered with us, double check the number is correct. You will need to call us on 1300 440 749 to change your number
    • if your mobile is not registered you can enter a valid Australian mobile e.g 04XX XXX XXX
    • if you don’t have a mobile, then select no thanks
  4. take a moment to review and memorise your answers and then click confirm
  5. and you’re done! Click start banking to be taken to your account balances page
  • How do I know this security upgrade is legitimate?

    You should only see the security upgrade tool once you have logged on to BOB. Double check that you are viewing the exact screen below. If not, please call us straight away on 1300 440 749.

    We will only ask you to setup some secret questions and confirm your mobile number to register for SMS code. We won't ask you to enter any account details to upgrade your security.

    Once you have completed the security upgrade you will not be prompted to upgrade your security again after you log on.

  • Why upgrade my security?

    SMS code and secret questions provide an extra layer of security to help protect you from any unauthorised transactions. Plus, with SMS code you'll get access to more great features in BOB including higher daily payment limits up to $20,000.

  • What are the benefits of this security upgrade?

    This security upgrade is our latest initiative in ensuring your online banking is as safe as possible. If someone else was to get access to your account, the potential harm will be significantly reduced if you have signed up for SMS code. Alongside the increased security, you’ll also be able to increase your payment limits and reset a forgotten secure code through online banking without having to call us.

  • What if I don’t have a mobile?

    Although you can’t sign up for SMS code, you’ll still get extra security by answering some secret questions instead whenever an extra identity check is required. You’ll set these up as part of the security upgrade.

  • When will I be asked to enter an SMS code?

    You will still login the same way but will be prompted to enter an SMS code when making the following transactions:

    • adding or paying a new BPAY or Pay AnyBody recipient
    • increasing your daily limits
    • resetting a forgotten secure code online
    • changing your secret questions or updating your contact details
  • When will I be asked to answer my secret questions?

    If you’re not registered for SMS code, then you will be prompted to answer two of your secret questions when making the following transactions:

    • adding or paying a new BPAY or Pay AnyBody recipient
    • making a BPAY or Pay AnyBody payment above a certain dollar amount
    • increasing your daily limits
    • resetting a forgotten secure code online
    • changing your secret questions or updating your contact details

    If you are registered for SMS code, then you will only be prompted to answer two of your secret questions when resetting a forgotten secure code (online banking password) online.

  • Can I register for SMS code at a later stage?

    Yes, it's simple. Simply log on to BOB, select my details & security from the menu and click activate SMS code.

  • What if my reason for not registering for SMS code isn’t listed?

    If your reason for opting out of SMS code is not in the list then please select other and enter your reason in the feedback field. Your feedback is greatly appreciated.
