Help Yourself To Some Added Peace Of Mind

Online security comes down to teamwork, and we regularly review our procedures to make sure we have all the latest techniques and controls in place to safeguard your privacy and protect your business.

In addition to the lengths we go to, there are steps you can routinely take to protect yourself - such as never disclosing your access details to anyone else.

You're also bound to hear or read about rogue schemes and techniques which are used to deliberately try and breach your security. Here's a list of the more common ones, a summary of what they try to achieve, and some tips for protecting yourself against them.

The scamWhat it doesHow You Can Protect Yourself Against It

Phishing

Rogue emails which look like official ones and try to trick you into entering your Online Banking Business logon details into fraudulent bank sites.

  • Never click on links within emails
  • Only type www.bankwest.com.au in the browser even if the link in the email appears to go to the same place
  • Only log on to BankWest Online Business Banking via our website at www.bankwest.com.au
  • Don't open suspicious-looking emails from unknown senders - especially any which ask you for personal or banking information
  • Use SPAM filter software
  • Use anti-virus software
  • Keep software updated (operating systems and web browsers)

Payment Recipient Scams

Efforts to persuade you to receive funds which criminals use to launder money from their activities.

  • Be suspicious of unknown senders or emails offering you money for performing financial services.
  • If you are unsure that an email you have received is an official BankWest Email, call our customer services line on 13 17 18

Spyware, Keyloggers or Keystroke Logging Worms

Programs which record keystrokes you make, and then pass the recorded information to unauthorised users.

  • Try to avoid using Online Business Banking from public access computers such as those in libraries, Internet cafés or universities
  • Decline freebies on the Internet that are advertised through pop-up banners
  • Keep your computer clean from Spyware by installing Spyware detection software

Trojans or Back-Door Trojans

Trojans are programs that masquerade as useful software but secretly perform a malicious purpose.

  • Make sure your anti-virus and personal firewall software is up to date, and run regular scans of your system to ensure it's virus-free

Shoulder Surfing

Efforts to spy on you while you're online and see logons, passwords and codes.

  • Make sure no-one can see your screen or watch you entering codes and passwords when you log on
  • Use a screen saver and screen lock if you are leaving your PC unattended for any period of time
  • Close all browser windows when you have completed your online banking

Of course, precautions such as these are just examples of security measures, and will not determine liability for losses resulting from unauthorised transactions. Liability will be determined in accordance with our Product Disclosure Statement

Remember, if you are concerned that you may have disclosed any personal or security information, please contact the Business Online Support Team immediately on 1800 997 035 (6.00am to 6.00pm WST Mon-Fri).
